It’s Not a Myth: Electrostatic Spraying Will Prevent the Spread of COVID-19

Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, we are told staying home is the best way to stop the spread. Unfortunately, this hasn’t been an option for most essential businesses. Now that many non-essential businesses are starting to open back up, we know it is more important now than ever to keep your staff healthy and safe, and we would like to help.

How Are You Protecting Your Staff?

When your staff arrives, they should have no doubts in your ability to maintain a safe and healthy environment. This pandemic has left a lot of building owners, medical officials, and office managers reevaluating what makes their workplace safe. Every person that enters your building has value, and it is your responsibility to ensure that the risk of illness is as low as possible.

Most buildings that are now reopening have been closed or unoperational for over a month. Many owners and managers tell us they will wait to pursue a full sanitization service, because they feel the virus is now dormant. We gently remind them that there are still so many facts the experts are learning about COVID-19. It is best to not take chances and to instead make sure that the building is fully disinfected.

How do you do that with a virus that spreads invisibly? While a lot of people may panic, it’s important to stay calm and to think about it rationally. It’s important to remember that many illnesses spread invisibly, similar to COVID-19, but there are still ways to slow down and even stop the spread. You have probably heard the tips and tricks to slowing the spread of COVID-19, such as sanitizing your space, washing your hands, keeping 6-foot spacing for social distancing and staying at home if you can. These are tips that sound like a simple task on the surface, but you may be asking if you can do more, especially if you aren’t able to stay home.

Electrostatic Spraying

Electrostatic spraying is an evolutionary infection control system that uses a chemical disinfectant. This system is the most effective method when it comes to killing 99.99% of viruses. Typical spray systems coat the surface, leaving much of the back or underneath side of an object bare. Electrostatic spraying wraps around the object, covering 75% more surface area than the average cleaning process, including hard to reach areas like crevices and around corners.

Our company uses a disinfectant called Virex II, a hospital one step disinfectant cleaner that is effective in killing numerous viruses, including COVID-19. This product needs to sit wet for 10 minutes to be fully effective. It will then air dry as it bonds to the surface, continuing to kill any viruses that it comes in contact with. After only 30 minutes, the coated surface will be disinfected properly and ready to use.

How Electrostatic Spray Works

As we mentioned previously, this system prevents outbreaks of viruses transmitted in the air and is effective in killing 99.99% of viruses, but how? The electrostatic sprayer charges the disinfectant as it passes through the nozzle. Thus, creating a positively charged liquid. If each droplet is positively charged, they will repel one another, forcing them to spread out and search for a negative charge. These droplets will be attracted to the negatively charged surface on which it is being applied. Since the positively charged droplets repel one another to spread out, it allows the disinfectant to cover the entire surface, not just the spot that was initially sprayed.

Additional Benefits

Electrostatic spraying can offer several benefits in addition to preventing the spread of viruses like COVID-19. The way the electrostatic sprayer distributes disinfectant will save you time, money, and give you better overall coverage.

  • Saves Time - The electrostatic sprayer helps the disinfectant to spread out and reach the back or underneath side of a surface; you will spend less time trying to wipe the entire surface.
  • Saves Money – Since the particles spread out, you will end up only spraying about half the surface, using less disinfectant and saving you money.
  • Better Coverage – The positively charged droplets can find their way to hard to reach places you may otherwise be unable to coat or reach.

Contact the Professionals

Typical wipe down services are not as effective when it comes to preventing the spread of COVID-19, leaving you and your employees exposed. With this virus spreading fast, you need to find the most effective way to disinfect your facility. The best way is through professional technicians, who know the ins and outs of biohazard cleanup. These are the professionals that can utilize electrostatic sprayers and will follow protocol for application and dwell times. Make sure the company you hire can answer all of these questions:

  1. What chemical are they using in their spray gun?
  2. Does the surface need to be wiped down after they spray the surface?
  3. Are they able to answer what the dwell time is to be fully effective?
  4. Are they able to explain the electrostatic process and why it is the best process out there?
  5. How long does it take before you can re-enter your facility?
  6. Does the chemical linger in the air?
  7. What PPE do they need to wear during the process?
  8. Are they offering a certification once the job is completed?
  9. Are there any items or areas that are affected by the spraying? Example: electronics, etc.
  10. How long does the process typically take?
  11. If using the Victory spray gun, are they using the right setting for the product being used?
  12. How long does everything stay disinfected for?
