Have you ever wondered how clean your office carpet really is? Here is your guide to the scary things living in your building’s carpet.
Office Food
Most people eat while in the office, so it is not uncommon to lose crumbs to the carpet. These crumbs can permeate the carpet fibers and break down beneath the carpet and the padding. When this happens, you may find that the office smells unpleasant.
Dead Skin
Did you know that you lose about eight pounds of dead skin a year? Multiply that by the number of coworkers and employees you have! This is a shocking amount of dead skin cells. Any microscopic bugs in the carpet feed off of these cells. Dead skin can also lead to allergies.
Mold and Mildew
If you let mold and mildew rule your office, it will destroy your flooring. Look for signs of mildew and seek to remove it immediately. If you can’t find any visible signs, remember that mold and mildew can come with a musty scent.
Dust Mites
Carpet beetles and dust mites are common in office carpets. Since they are so tiny, they are very difficult to see. If someone you work with thinks they may have been bitten by bedbugs at home, it might actually be carpet bugs from the office. These bites can lead to rashes, much like bed bugs.
Dirt and Dust
Dirt and dust are everywhere! Dirt gets tracked in by workers in high-traffic areas. In addition, dirty air ducts can circulate dust through the building until it settles into the flooring. When you have dust and dirt buildup, it can lead to a shorter carpet life.
Germs and Bacteria
Germs and bacteria can invade your carpet fiber. Norovirus, Staphylococcus aureus, and other bacteria can live in dirty carpets. You will want to use specialized cleaning equipment to conduct a deep cleaning to ensure that your carpet is not full of germs.
